Moon Dough Vs. Regular Playdough

Before we get into the recipe, let’s explore how moon dough differs from regular playdough. While both are popular for sensory play, they offer distinct textures and play experiences:

  • Texture: Moon dough is much softer and is eventually more crumbly than regular playdough. It has a lightweight, super soft texture that’s easy to mold and press into shapes and squish in your hands.
  • Ingredients: Traditional playdough is typically made with flour, salt, water, and oil, giving it a smooth, dense texture. Moon dough, on the other hand, is often made with flour and conditioner, resulting in a fluffier, more pliable dough.
  • Play Experience: Regular playdough is ideal for detailed sculpting and modeling, while moon dough is perfect for sensory play, pressing into molds, and creating simple shapes. Its unique texture makes it an exciting alternative for kids who love to explore new materials.

Now that you know the differences, let’s move on to the fun part—making your own moon dough at home!

Step 2: Knead the Dough:

  • At this time, switch to your hands and knead the mixture until it reaches a soft playdough-like texture.
  • If it turns out too sticky, let it sit a bit before use as the dough will dry out just a bit more after only about 15 minutes of being mixed together.

Step 3: Storage:

Store the moon dough in an airtight container or zip-top bag or store it in sealed, separate containers when not in use. This will help keep it fresh for future play sessions, enjoy!

Moon Dough Recipe Tips

  • This lasts a long time if stored properly. Storage should always be a sealed container in a cool, dry spot, for the best results.
  • If you don’t want to add food coloring, just simply get a conditioner that’s the color you would like. The color will be lighter going this route, but no dye will be added.
  • Do not use gel or oil-based food dye. It doesn’t work as well. However, liquid and powder dyes should be fine.
  • Just like playdough, this dough will easily mix colors when played together. It’s also slightly messy but easily cleaned up after use. I suggest an easy-to-clean surface for playtime.
  • Any conditioner will do. I go for the cheapest dollar store conditioner.
  • If you want more than one color, you’ll want to repeat the recipe for each color. The recipe only covers one ball of moon dough.
