DIY Coral Reef Sensory Bin

Here is how to make a coral reef for kids and toddlers:

Materials Needed

• 1 cup vinegar
• 3 different food dye 
• 3 Ziploc bags
• 2 cups of old cereal (Kix, Lucky Charms, Special K) 
• Variety of dry noodles
• Grinder

Instructions

1. Use a blender or grinder and crush all the cereal into a fine powder, so it looks like sand. 

2. Take about ⅓ cup vinegar into a small bowl and add drops of blue food dye and stir. Keep adding drops until you get a dark, rich color. 

3. Put ⅓ of the dry noodles into a Ziploc bag and pour the blue vinegar into the bag. Shake to combine.

4. Repeat the same steps for green and red food dye. 

5. Pour the noodles on a cookie sheet and leave overnight to dry out. You can have the noodles touching each other on the pan. 

6. Once the noodles are dry, break the chunks apart. 

7.Pour the sand on a plate and let your child create their own coral reef! 

Notes

• This is for a taste-safe recipe. You can always use paint instead of vinegar if you want, but it won’t be taste safe.
• For older kids, you can show different types of coral reefs and have them try to replicate it! Print out some coral reefs examples for young kids who don’t know what a coral reef looks like. Or you can read a book about coral reefs (like this one) before they make their own.
