Playdough for Sensory Play
Sensory play is so important for toddlers to develop so many skills, including fine motor skills, creativity, concentration, calming activity, and so much more.
I was always so concerned about sensory play with my little ones because they would always put things into their mouths and I liked to take a break and practice some self-care from a bit of a distance while they enjoyed their play time.
With taste safe sensory play, that is not a problem! I am close enough to help when they need it, but far enough I get a chance to relax and unwind.

Ingredients for Kid-Friendly Play Dough Recipe
- 1 Cup Cooked Flour
- ½ Cup Salt
- ½ Cup Water
- 2 tsp Vegetable Oil
- ½ tsp Food Coloring (optional)
How to Make Taste Safe Play Dough
- Make your flour taste safe first beforehand. You can do this by putting your flour onto a cookie sheet and baking it in the oven for about 5 minutes at 350 degrees. Once it has cooled down, it is ready to use for your taste safe play dough recipe!
- Mix together the flour and salt in a mixing bowl.
- Add your choice of food coloring to the water and mix them well. This is totally optional, but kids do like the pop of colors!
- Then, add the colored water to the flour mixture. Add in the oil and mix thoroughly.
- Continue mixing and stirring all the ingredients together. You might need to get your hands dirty during this step. Keep mixing, folding, and kneading the dough until it reaches the perfect playdough consistency!
- Make a few more colors by repeating the process if you want or else your toddlers can enjoy right away!
- Store this dough is in airtight containers. If stored correctly, this playdough lasts a long time!
Play Dough for Toddlers Recipe Tips
- If the dough feels a little tacky or sticky, just sprinkle on more flour a little bit at a time until the desired consistency is reached or it is no longer sticky.
- Mixing the food coloring in the water helps to really even the color out in the dough. It also speeds the process up as well. If you do not do this step, the kneading time will be a lot longer, and your hands might start to hurt! Mixing the coloring and water also makes a more even color tone as well.
- I noticed after storing it for the first night, it needed a touch more flour as it seemed to get sticky once again, but was perfect after that.
- Any oil is fine to use, but make sure to use ones that you can digest, so it remains taste-safe.
- I used gel colors for a brighter dye look, but any are fine. If you want an all natural play dough recipe, try using turmeric or beet juice for fun colors!
- I wouldn’t add any essential oils into this since it is a taste safe play dough recipe and essential oils shouldn’t be ingested by kids.
