Here are a few benefits your child will get from making this ice cream handprint with you:
Fine Motor Skills
Gluing and cutting helps toddlers develop their fine motor skills. These tasks require precision and control, which strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers, essential for future activities like writing and cutting.
Creativity and Imagination
Crafting encourages children to think creatively and use their imagination.
Transforming a handprint into an ice cream cone allows them to visualize and create something unique, fostering artistic expression and innovative thinking.
Color Recognition
Using various colors during the craft helps toddlers learn and recognize different colors.
Discussing the colors used, such as brown for the cone and a mix of bright colors for the ice cream scoops, reinforces their color vocabulary and recognition abilities.

DIY Handprint Ice Cream Craft
Now, here is how to make your own handprint ice cream cone:
Supplies
- Construction paper
- Pencil
- Glue
- Scissors
- Sharpies
- Ice cream cone template
Instructions
Print and cut out the template patterns for the handprint ice cream craft. The template includes patterns for the cone, sprinkles, cherry, ice cream, and topping.
Select the color papers you want to use and trace the patterns on the selected papers. While the template has a handprint, trace and use your own child’s handprint.
Use a darker shade of matching colored sharpie to draw the waffle texture on the cone cutout.
Attach the stem cutout on the top side of the cherry cutout.
Take the handprint cutout (the ice cream for this craft) and attach the topping cutout on the palm part of
the handprint cutout. The palm side of the handprint will be the top side of the ice cream craft.
Attach the paper cherry on the top-middle part of the attached topping pattern.
Use matching sharpies to draw outlines on the ice cream (handprint), topping, and cherry patterns.
Prepare the sprinkle cutouts from different colored craft papers. You can use scrap paper for the sprinkle
cutouts.
Apply small glue drops on the topping pattern where you want to place the sprinkle cutouts. Neatly place the sprinkle cutouts on the glue drops.
Attach the ice-cream pattern (handprint) on the top side of the cone pattern to complete the ice cream
craft.
Tips and Tricks
Creating a fun and smooth crafting experience for this handprint craft idea is crucial. I know some crafts I’ve done with my kids turned out to be an awful experience because I wasn’t prepared enough or patient enough.
Here are a few tips to help you and your toddlers with this craft:
Keep Toddlers Engaged
To keep your toddler interested, make the activity lively and interactive.
Sing songs about ice cream, tell stories, or make up a game related to the craft.
Involve them in decision-making, such as choosing the colors for the ice cream sprinkles.
Manage the Mess
Minimize mess by setting up a designated crafting area with a protective covering on the table.
Use washable markers and have wet wipes or a damp cloth handy for quick cleanups. Dress your child in old clothes or an apron to avoid staining their regular outfits.
Don’t be afraid of the mess, or think that it won’t be a messy craft. All crafts with toddlers are pretty messy!
Instead, be prepared for the mess when it comes.
Variations and Customizations
Encourage your child’s creativity by allowing them to personalize the craft.
They can use different colors for the ice cream sprinkles and toppings, add other sprinkles with glitter or small sequins, or draw additional ice cream toppings if they want.
Personalizing the craft makes it more enjoyable and meaningful for the child.
